And furthermore we will investigations the present difficulties ahead for both China. Regardless of whether China will have the option to hold up this energy In future Is most troublesome inquiry to be replied. Despite the fact that numerous World associations are positioning China as the main Economic intensity of world and India among t op 3 most created countries of the world by 2050. Hole of the BRICKS countries is on the ascent when investigated the previous two decades plainly proposes that the GAP development in total terms is on the rise. The graph beneath has en created by changing over the neighborhood Currencies in to Current US Dollars. (Overlooking the Currency changes for simple examination) GAP Growth pace of China has been on the top all through the two decades and it has supported the development reliably. Let us take a gander at the Factors liable for the Growth of China Beginning with China the primary Factors answerable for the China's Growth are High Productivity of Labor and 2. Speculations of both by the Government and Private Sector. The fare and assembling divisions are key drivers of China's economy. The Workforce of china has been beneficial and as indicated by Study done by one f rumored Management Institute it was that China's Labor power was 18% more profitable than American work power. It was additionally discovered that there Is still more degree for Improvement in Productivity for Chinese Labor. With Productive work and new abilities being granted by the enormous number of Universities, progressively number of individuals are to Join the present Labor showcase with cutting edge skills. There Is more probable possibility that the work will be accessible at ideal value levels as gone are the days as China was considered for modest labor. Throug hout the most recent decade Chinese Government spending plan is in the excess aside from in 2009, when Chinese government needed to accommodate Stimulus as western world was in hold of Financial Crisis. The Surplus of Chinese Government financial plan is helping them to secure trend setting innovation, oil resources in African Continent and Sovereign funds.Again China beat the BRICKS countries in development of Exports. China has changed itself in to assembling center point of the world. Its worldwide fare share has soar from only 1. 9 percent in 1990 to 11. 5 percent currently, at long last arriving at equality with its worldwide GAP share. Late droop in Chinese fares can be found in diagram which is credited to the frail interest in both US and European nations which are China's significant fare markets. Frail interest in the western nations is because of delayed down of the economies because of late money related crisis. This can be an impermanent pattern as once US and European E conomies get there will be more noteworthy interest for Chinese fares. China has kept up serious edge over the world with its huge modest work power which was gainful, modest crude materials, low force costs with modern Infrastructure and Technology. Be that as it may, scarcely any Analysts anticipate Chinese intensity is not, at this point because of 1. Rising work compensation, attributable to a dazzling 66-percent expansion in compensation since 2008. 2. China has kept the Credit rates exceptionally low helping simple obligation financing for producers and exporters. With rising expansion and awful advances sneaked in to the framework, Chinese government needs to act quickly to clean budgetary segment. This may have an unfriendly impact in close to term. End: Though looking with close to term difficulties China is all around ready to take on the difficulties in a superior manner and Chinese development story will stay flawless. Till now China's development was upheld by Exports. P resently China changed itself in to a Factory of the world with huge number of workforce adding to as of now workforce. As per gauges these common laborers will have 40% of china's populace as Middle Class by 2020. This working class with raising desires and spending will prod the interest. In close to term China will see a great deal of Domestic interest prodded by utilization of this white collar class. Till ongoing occasions China's Economy which was prodded by Manufacturing and Exports segment will likewise have Consumption driven economy requesting administrations and merchandise. This will contain the present degrees of the GAP development rates. Thus I will purchase in to the China's continued development story in long haul. Firms have come to understand that so as to get serious in the market they have to go past the neighborhood markets. This is one actuality that administration of Haier is very much aware of and is anticipating how to grow the piece of the pie for its coolers. There is have to go into the developing markets with this product.Advertising We will compose a custom report test on International Business in Emerging Economies explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More One of the most alluring goals for this item is in South Africa (Pitt 2001, p. 58). This isn't simply because of the enormous size of the nation, yet in addition in light of the huge development of its economy. South Africa is one of the rising economies, and the normal buying intensity of the individuals of this nation is moderately high when contrasted with other neighboring nations in the locale. The rise of the white collar class in South Africa implies that Haier fridges can without much of a stretch locate a tremendous market in this nation. This is particularly so in the significant urban communities, for example, Cape Town and Johannesburg. Be that as it may, this firm can possibly prevail in this market in the event that it comprehends the outside natural powers that will influence its tasks while in this nation. The administration ought to likewise know about the inside qualities and shortcomings so as to devise methods of dealing with the outside market powers. This exploration will dissect the South African market condition. Outside Business Environment of South Africa Cultural, political, monetary, and legitimate parts of a nation make up the outer condition of a business. Outside business condition is significant in light of the fact that it will consistently decide achievement or disappointment of a firm. A specialty unit can't make due in an unfriendly business condition. As per Cooper (2009, p. 78), outside business condition consistently directs development and advancement of a business. So as to comprehend business condition of South Africa, PESTEL examination will be significant. This monetary examination instrument will assist us with seeing South Africa as a business area, and its practicality in supporting development and improvement of this firm. PESTEL Analysis of South African Business Environment Political Aspects South Africa is one of the main vote based systems in this district. This nation turned into a republic in 1994 from the Dutch. The president is the head of state and government. Strategically, South Africa has a truly steady government. The nation has encountered a significant stretch of political steadiness that has made it helpful for business. It has an entirely steady government that is strong of business operations.Advertising Looking for report on business financial aspects? How about we check whether we can su pport you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More According to Coulter (2009, p. 89), the world of politics of South Africa has been steady of business tasks. This researcher says that the political class has made an unmistakable differentiation among legislative issues and business conditions. The advances starting with one system then onto the next have been extremely serene, and none has ever had a genuine negative impact on the business brotherhood since its freedom. Financial Aspects As was expressed above, South Africa has the biggest economy in Africa dependent on Gross Domestic Product. In spite of the fact that the GDP is in every case significant while breaking down the appeal of a nation in supporting a business, the most significant factor is consistently the riches held by singular residents. This nation is perhaps the wealthiest country in Africa in normal family riches. This implies its residents have solid buying power. This makes the nation an extremely alluri ng business sector for firms keen on wandering into it. The report by Davida (2008, p. 78) likewise shows that this nation is evaluated well in buying power equality by GDP in this district. This implies abundance of the country is genuinely spread. This builds the buying intensity of the nation. South Africans do welcome the need to spare, yet they additionally spend a decent piece of their salary. It is significant however, to comprehend the way that this nation has likewise been encountering monetary downturn that has been influencing the world every once in a while. The nation was influenced by the 2009 monetary downturn that hit the United States and different areas of the world. The South African government thought of different arrangements promptly the 2008/2009 financial downturn finished. The administration has tried to guarantee that the economy of the nation don't encounter troubles it confronted. The Socio-Cultural Environment South Africa has one of the most extravagant socio-social conditions on the planet. Devellis (2001, p. 69) says that South Africa has a rich social legacy that makes it stand apart among numerous different nations. The socio-social condition of this nation is expanded. This is on the grounds that this nation has individuals from everywhere throughout the world. The individuals of South Africa appreciate balance, and ladies have equivalent monetary quality similarly as men. In this nation, this firm ought not section the market dependent on sexual orientation. The nation has been known for its beliefs and revelations of privileges of ladies. In view of religion, this nation has a few adherents who are from various religions. The main religion is Christianity. Be that as it may, there are Muslims, Jews, Hindus, and Pagans among other African religions. Every one of these religions have been existing together calmly and with no type of friction.Advertising We will compose a custom report test on International Business in Emergin g Economies explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More However, each gathering has its own convictions that make them one of a kind in the market (Letavec 2006, p. 57). For example, Muslims don't eat pork. In spite of the fact that their populace isn't high in this nation, they have an effect in the market. The administration of Haier should along these lines, be cautious while fragmenting the market. As indicated by Clark (2000, p. 650), there is an interesting character that makes the South African market not quite the same as others. The South Africans for the most part love recreation. They likewise like appealing items that represent love forever and for other people. This is the motivation behind why it is one of the main markets for blossoms in Africa. The nation is likewise extremely delicate with regards to issues about hues. They have social convictions about some particular hues. Each shading has a particular connection, and is in this manner, reasonable for v arious events. The Management of Haier must take a sharp thought when picking hues for its items. This general public is likewise cautious about phrasing. Each word has a unique importance. As an advertiser of Haier, one would should be cautious with the decision of word utilized during the special battles (Nagarajan 2005, p. 29). Any off-base use of word may cost a firm its piece of the overall industry. The mechanical condition in this nation is extremely unique. Mechanical developments and advancements, particularly in the field of correspondence have been the fundamental test and quality of different firms simultaneously. While a few firms are left with bad dreams of attempting to think about what their rivals in the market are going to concoct for the time being, some have utilized this innovation to rise as the pioneers in the market. Mechanical changes are so unusual and firms are battling to come terms with these changes. The dynamism of innovation in this part has constrain ed a few firms out of the market. Legitimate Aspects According to Goolnik (2006, p. 56), no firm can work in an industry that has no reasonable laws and guidelines to help as a rule administration. Laws and guidelines are constantly authorized to help characterize the connection between a firm and the legislature, a firm and people in general, and a firm with different firms. This law ought to be sure about different operational issues so as to guarantee that activities of one firm don't influence that of another firm. A few governments consistently sanction laws that may rouse development of one industry, while obstructing the development of another nation. Different laws may likewise be ordered to debilitate remote firms from putting resources into the country.Advertising Searching for report on business financial aspects? The laws have energized development of the private area through open private organization (Kanda 2011, p. 84). Legitimately, most firms have not confronted significant difficulties. The laws that oversee exchange South Africa have been entirely great for most firms. Be that as it may, a few firms have confronted genuine suit cases for inability to keep a portion of the business rules and guidelines. Of significance to note is that this nation is to a great extent a Christian state. The vast majority of the laws of this land depend on the ethics and convictions of Christianity. Hence along these lines, a few organizations rehearses are not permitted in this nation (Binder 2007, p. 84). Inability to adhere to the business and national laws and guideline may not just lead to genuine fines forced by the administration on the firm, however even an absolute conclusion of the firm. Haier ought to know about this. T he administration has plainly characterized how firms ought to relate among themselves. Such issues as notices are firmly controlled, with different organizations definitely observing substance of the adverts. This is explicitly so because of two primary reasons. The principal reason is to guarantee that an advert for organization A doesn't have an immediate negative impact on items for organization B. This is to make a sound serious condition where firms have regard for each other. Another explanation behind this guideline is watchers of the adverts who are beneath the period of dominant part. I face this feeling when I write about serious topics. I question whether Iâm qualified to write about certain subjects, conjuring a tornado of negative thoughts: Iâm not perfect. Iâm not a Zen master. Iâm not Dr. Nicodemus. Iâm not worthy. I could blame my upbringing for my psychological defect: I wasnât encouraged to be more than I was; however, I clearly remember being told what I wasnât. Whenever I catch myself inside this whirlwind of negative thought, I recognize what Iâm doing and redirect my self-talk toward a more positive direction. Instead of what Iâm not, I focus on what I am: I am kind. I am genuine. I am adding value. I am worthy. Our level of self-worth is directly affected by the rules weâve built for ourselves. If you have a rule for yourself that says, âI am not a baker if I donât own a bakery,â then guess what: youâre not going to feel worthy enough to call yourself a baker until you open a bakery. Most of our internal rules have been shaped by years of reinforcement. That doesnât mean we must live by those rules for the rest of our lives, though. When we catch ourselves feeling unworthy, we should look for the rule weâve established that makes us feel this way. Regardless of what weâve done in our pasts, we still get to decide our own levels of self-worth based on the rules weâve established. As long as you are living up to those rules, you are worthy. When Frederick S. Siebert, Theodore Peterson, and Wilbur Schramms first introduced Theories of the Press more than 40 years ago, it constituted the most well-known attempt to clarify the link between mass media culture in modern world. Their theories have been widely accepted and utilized by media scholars. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Press Media Journalism" essay for you Create order However, their theories appear in some respects outdated and too simplistic to be useful in todays global mass media environment. The four theories are: the authoritarian theory ââ¬â in this theory, the function of the press is to support the policies and actions of the state, and its authorities. The press should foster social solidarity and national unity. The state has the right to control the press for the overall public good. In many cases, controlling the press means preventing the press from embarrassing the existing government, to repress criticism and protest, and to severely restrict press freedom. The authoritarian view was prevalent in 17th century Europe where publishing came under the prerogative and censorship powers of the monarch and church. The authoritarian theory is embraced today by many leaders of non-democratic states; Next, the libertarian theory the function of the press is to protect the peoples liberties and rights, and to inform the public so they can participate as citizens in democratic self-government. The liberal theory prefers a privately owned news media that is maximally free to inform citizens and criticize public policy, as well as act as a watchdog on authorities. The right to publish and express oneself freely is not a prerogative of the state or a government. It is a fundamental right of free individuals. The liberal theory argues that a free marketplace of ideas, while it may cause harm over the short term, is the best safeguard in the long run for a free and liberal society. Third, the social responsibility an American initiative in the late forties brought forth the social responsibility theory. Realizing that the market had failed to fulfil the promise that press freedom would reveal the truth, The Commission on Freedom of the Press provided a model in which the media had certain obligations to society. These obligations were expressed in the words informativeness, truth, accuracy, object ivity, and balance. Siebert wrote that the goal of the social responsibility system is that media as a whole is pluralized, indicating a reflection of the diversity of society as well as access to various points of view As opposed to the libertarian theory, the social responsibility principle is to provide an entrance to different mass media to minority groups. The journalist is accountable to his audience as well as to the government. It attempts to balance the liberal stress on the freedom of the press. It argues that such freedoms of a powerful news media must be balanced by social responsibilities. Journalists have a duty to provide well-contextualized news in a comprehensive manner. They have a duty to provide a diverse forum of views and values. They have a duty to go beyond entertaining news consumers and to provide a core of in-depth analysis on the most serious issues. Most media systems in Western Europe today come close to the social responsibility theory. Lastly, the Soviet communist theory ââ¬â it is closely tied to a specific ideology; the communist. Media in communist societies are state-owned and the government had a division of censorship. Other means of control included the appointment of editors, a large number of directives regarding press content and press reviews and criticisms. The media organizations in this system were not intended to be privately owned and were to serve the interests of the working class. Today, the name of this theory is only of historical interest. The clearest current example of the communist theory is how the media function in China, where TV, radio, and newspapers are controlled by the communist government. However, the press in China has come a long way since the Chinese Communist Party took over the Chinese government in 1949 and it continues to expand its freedom heading into the 21st century. Even though the communist press theory was based on the model of the Soviet press system it does not fully describe the Chinese press system today after more than 20 years of economic liberalizations and opening to the outside world. For instance, the Soviet press model removes the profit motive from publishing and broadcasting. But Chinas economic reforms started in 1978 changed all that. Economic reform of the media in China began almost as early as the overall economic reform (Zhao,1998, p.53). In addition, media commercialization has become an important part of the development of the market economy as the Chinese government has adopted a policy of gradually cutting subsidies and encouraging commercialized financing. More importantly, advertising, the capitalist genie, has finally made its way to the world of communist media. To meet the new challenge, the press, including the ones directly under the control of the party, not only has to publicize the partys policies, but also keep an eye on the bottom line as the press has been assuming increasing respo nsibilities in covering the cost and balancing the sheet. Even the official Xinhua news agency and the party paper, Peoples Daily, are trying to turn out more profitable publications. Editors in China are made aware that newspapers are not only political tools, but they have to be money-makers as well. To be competitive on the market, newspapers in China have to appeal to the readers, not just the party officials. The biggest challenge facing Chinese editors today is to strike the right balance between being politically correct and commercially viable. Also the Soviet model mostly prescribes a positive role for the press ââ¬â the press should be an agitator, an organizer and promoter for the socialist cause. In the Chinese press today, readers can find more negative news, which is a taboo in the rigid communist media model as bad news are seen as demoralizers. Given the rampant corruption among government officials in China, some high-level government officials enc ourage the press to engage in more investigations (Peoples Daily, 2002). For example, Caijing,a financial magazine, made a name for itself for its investigative reporting of the financial sector (Kurtenbach, 2002). And some provincial governments have made new laws banning their officials from refusing interviews with the press (China Daily, 2001). Such laws were unimaginable before the reforms or under the Soviet media model. Under the communist media system, all media are owned by the state and no foreign media are allowed. But even thought the majority of the media in China today are still owned by the state, there are some joint ventures already with foreign investment, including a joint-venture Internet service in technology information between the Peoples Dailyand the News Corp owned by Australian media tycoon, Rupert Murdoch (Reuters, 1998). Now as a member of the World Trade Organization, China will face more and more foreign capital in its media industries whether it likes it or not. China is also working on an international media centre with a total floor space of 130,000 square meters, which will serve as an office building for more than 100 foreign media organizations in Beijing (Beijing Morning Post, 2002). The centre is planned to be equipped with state-of-the-art satellite communication and fibre optical devices for fast transmission of data, texts and pictures. And in 2001, Reuters Qing Niao website, a site for trade information and e-business, made a low-key entry into China (Reuters, 2001). The Soviet communist media model is a closed system. But China has opened up. It is Chinas national policy to reintegrate itself into the world community. However, one of the major problems concerning the Chinese press today is the low ethical standard held by some local papers. It is no longer rare news that newspapers are sued for their inaccurate and sensational stories, which seldom occurs under an orthodox communist media system. T he Soviet communist media theory would be an inaccurate summary of the lively and messy, and yet controlled press in China today. In the wake of the theories old and new one important question remains: How should the ethics of journalism change to face the challenges of a new media environment whether in China, the United States or any other country? To make matters more complicated, the news media are now global in a radically pluralistic world. Is a new global journalism ethics required? In conclusion, while the four theories of the press have the beauty and elegance of a very simple but clear structure, they have difficulties in providing a reliable guide in todays global press systems because the universality of the theories is limited. However, if we try too hard at being specific and accurate in describing press systems, we may end up with as many press theories as the number of press systems that exist. Another important factor in building a more reliable theor etical guide may be that more dynamics need to be built into the theories so that they can accommodate the changes in the press systems around the world. God, it stank. RashelJordan had seen a lot of vampire lairs in her seventeen years, but this was probably the most disgusting. She held her breath as she stirred the nest of tattered cloth with the toe of one boot. We will write a custom essay sample on Night World : The Chosen Chapter 3 or any similar topic only for you Order Now She could read the story of this collection of garbage as easily as if the inhabitant had written out a full confession, signed it, and posted it on the wall. One vampire. A rogue, an outcast who lived on the fringe of both the human world and the Night World. He probably moved to anew city every few weeks to avoid getting caught. And he undoubtedly looked like any other homeless guy, except that none of the human homeless would be hanging around aBoston dock on a Tuesday night in early March. He brings his victims here, Rashel thought. The pierââ¬â¢s deserted, itââ¬â¢s private, he can take his time with them. And of course he canââ¬â¢t resist keeping a few trophies. Her foot stirred them gently. A pink-and-blue knit baby jacket, a plaid sash from a school uniform, a Spiderman tennis shoe. All bloodstained. All very small. There had been a rash of missing children lately. TheBoston police would never discover where they had gone-but now Rashel knew. She felt her lips draw back slightly from her teeth in something that wasnââ¬â¢t really a smile. She was aware of everything around her: the soft plash of water against the wooden pier, the rank coppery smell that was almost a taste, the darkness of a night lit only by a half moon. Even the light moisture of the cold breeze against her skin. She was aware of all of it without being preoccupied with any of it-and when the tiny scratch sounded behind her, she moved as smoothly and gracefully as if she were taking her turn in a dance. She pivoted on her left foot, drawing her bokken in the same motion, and without a break in the movement, she stabbed straight to the vampireââ¬â¢s chest. She drove the blow from her hips, exhaling in a hiss as she did it, putting all her strength behind it. ââ¬Å"Gotta be faster than that,â⬠she said. The vampire, skewered like a hot dog, waved his arms and gibbered. He was dressed in filthy clothing and his hair was a bushy tangle. His eyes were wide, full of surprise and hatred, shining as silver as an animalââ¬â¢s in the faint light. His teeth werenââ¬â¢t so much fangs as tusks: fully extended, they reached almost to his chin. ââ¬Å"I know,â⬠Rashel said. ââ¬Å"You really, really wanted to kill me. Lifeââ¬â¢s tough, isnââ¬â¢t it?â⬠The vampire snarled one more time and then the silver went out of his eyes, leaving only the look of astonishment. His body stiffened and slumped backward. It lay still on the ground. Grimacing, Rashel pulled her wooden sword out of the chest. She started to wipe the blade on the vampireââ¬â¢s pants, then hesitated, peering at them more closely. Yes, those were definitely little crawly things. And the blankets were just as repulsive. Oh, well. Use your own jeans. It wonââ¬â¢t be the first time. She carefully wiped the bokken clean. It was two and a half feet long and just slightly, gracefully curved, with a narrow, sharp, angled tip. Designed to penetrate a body as efficiently as possible-if that body was susceptible to wood. The sword slipped back into its sheath with a papery whisper. Then Rashel glanced at the body again. Mr. Vampire was already going mummified. His skin was now yellow and tough; his staring eyes were dried up, his lips shrunken, his tusks collapsed. Rashel bent over him, reaching into her back pocket. What she pulled out looked like the snapped-off end of a bamboo backscratcher-which was exactly what it was. Sheââ¬â¢d had it for years. Very precisely, Rashel drew the five lacquered fingers of the scratcher down the vampireââ¬â¢s forehead. On the yellow skin five brown marks appeared, like the marks of a catââ¬â¢s claws. Vampire skin was easy to mark tight after death. ââ¬Å"This kitten has claws,â⬠she murmured. It was a ritual sentence; sheââ¬â¢d repeated it ever since the night sheââ¬â¢d killed her first vampire at the age of twelve. In memory of her mother, whoââ¬â¢d always called her kitten. In memory of herself at age five, and all the innocence sheââ¬â¢d lost. Sheââ¬â¢d never be a helpless kitten again. Besides, it was a little joke. Vampiresâ⬠¦ bats. Herselfâ⬠¦ a cat. Anybody whoââ¬â¢d grown up with Batman and Catwoman would get it. Well. All done. Whistling softly, she rolled the body over and over with her foot to the end of the pier. She didnââ¬â¢t feel like carting the mummy all the way out to the fens, the salt marshes where bodies were traditionally left inBoston . With a mental apology to everybody who was trying to clean up the harbor, she gave the corpse a final push and listened for the splash. She was still whistling as she emerged from the pier onto the street. Hi-ho, hi-ho, itââ¬â¢s off to work we goââ¬â She was in a very good mood. The only disappointment was the constant one, that it hadnââ¬â¢t been the vampire, the one sheââ¬â¢d been looking for ever since sheââ¬â¢d been five years old. It had been a rogue, all right-a depraved monster who killed human kids foolishly close to human habitations. But it hadnââ¬â¢t been the rogue. Rashel would never forget his face. And she knew that someday she would see it again. Meanwhile, there was nothing to do but shish-kebab as many of the parasites as possible. She scanned the streets as she walked, alert for any sign of Night People. All she saw were quiet brick buildings and streetlights shining pale gold. And that was a shame, because she was in terrific form tonight; she could feel it. She was every bloodsucking leechââ¬â¢s worst enemy. She could stake six of them before breakfast and still be fresh for chemistry first period at Wassaguscus High. Rashel stopped suddenly, absent-mindedly melting into a shadow as a police car cruised silently down the cross-street ahead. I know, she thought. Iââ¬â¢ll go see what the Lancers are up to. If anybody knows where vampires are, they do. She headed for the North End. Half an hour later she was standing in front of a brownstone apartment building, ringing the buzzer. ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s there?â⬠Instead of answering, Rashel said, ââ¬Å"The night has a thousand eyes.â⬠ââ¬Å"And the day only one,â⬠came the reply from the intercom. ââ¬Å"Hey there, girl. Come on up.â⬠Inside, Rashel climbed a dark and narrow stairway to a scarred wooden door. There was a peephole in the door. Rashel faced it squarely, then pulled off the scarf sheââ¬â¢d been wearing. It was black, silky, and very long. She wore it wrapped around her head and face like a veil, so that only her eyes showed, and even they were in shadow. She shook out her hair, knowing what the person on the other side could see. A tall girl dressed like a ninja, all hi black, with black hair falling loose around her shoulders and green eyes blazing. She hadnââ¬â¢t changed much since she was five, except in height. Right now she made a barbaric face at the peephole and heard the sound of laughter behind the door as bolts were drawn. She waited until the door was shut behind her again before she said, ââ¬Å"Hi, Elliot.â⬠Elliot was a few years older than she was, and thin, with intense eyes and little shiny glasses that were always slipping off his nose. Some people would have dismissed him as a geek. But Rashel had once seen him stand up to two werewolves while she got a human girl out a window, and she knew that he had practically single-handedly started the Lancers-one of the most successful organizations of vampire hunters on the east coast. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s up, Rashel? Itââ¬â¢s been a while.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve been busy. But now Iââ¬â¢m bored. I came to see if you guys had anything going.â⬠As Rashel spoke, she was looking at the other people in the room. A brown-haired girl was kneeling, loading objects from boxes into a dark green backpack. Another girl and a boy were sitting on the couch. Rashel recognized the boy from other Lancers meetings, but neither of the girls were familiar. ââ¬Å"Lucky you,â⬠Elliot said. ââ¬Å"This is Vicky, my new second-in-command.â⬠He nodded at the girl on the floor. ââ¬Å"She just moved toBoston ; she was the leader of a group on the south shore. And tonight sheââ¬â¢s taking a little expedition out to some warehouses in Mission Hill. We got a lead that thereââ¬â¢s been some activity out there.â⬠ââ¬Å"What kind of activity? Leeches, puppies?â⬠Elliot shrugged. ââ¬Å"Vampires definitely. Werewolves maybe. Thereââ¬â¢s been a rumor about teenage girls getting kidnapped and stashed somewhere around there. The problem is we donââ¬â¢t know exactly where, or why.â⬠He tilted his head, his eyes twinkling. ââ¬Å"You want to go?â⬠ââ¬Å"Isnââ¬â¢t anybody going to ask me?â⬠Vicky said, straightening up from her backpack. Her pale blue eyes were fixed on Rashel. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve never even seen this girl before. She could be one of them.â⬠Elliot pushed his glasses higher on his nose. He looked amused. ââ¬Å"You wouldnââ¬â¢t say that if you knew, Vicky. Rashelââ¬â¢s the best.â⬠ââ¬Å"At what?â⬠ââ¬Å"At everything. When you were going to your fancy prep school, she was out in theChicago slums staking vampires. Sheââ¬â¢s been inL.A. ,New York ,New Orleansâ⬠¦ even Vegas. Sheââ¬â¢s wiped out more parasites than the rest of us put together.â⬠Elliot glanced mischievously at Rashel, then leaned toward Vicki. ââ¬Å"Ever heard of the Cat?â⬠he said. Vickiââ¬â¢s head snapped up. She stared at Rashel. ââ¬Å"The Cat? The one all the Night People are afraid of? The one theyââ¬â¢re offering a reward for? The one who leaves a mark-ââ¬Å" Rashel shot Elliot a warning look. ââ¬Å"Never mind,â⬠she said. She wasnââ¬â¢t sure she trusted these new people. Vicky was right about one thing: you couldnââ¬â¢t be too careful. And she didnââ¬â¢t like Vicky much, but she could hardly turn down such a good opportunity for vampire hunting. Not tonight, when she was in such terrific form. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll go with you-if youââ¬â¢ll have me,â⬠she said. Vickyââ¬â¢s pale blue eyes bored into Rashelââ¬â¢s a moment, then she nodded. ââ¬Å"Just remember Iââ¬â¢m in charge.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sure,â⬠Rashel murmured. She could see Elliotââ¬â¢s grin out of the corner of her eye. ââ¬Å"You know Steve, and thatââ¬â¢s Nyala.â⬠Elliot indicated the boy and girl on the couch. Steve had blond hair, muscular shoulders, and a steady expression; Nyala had skin like cocoa and a faraway look in her eyes, as if she were sleepwalking. ââ¬Å"Nyalaââ¬â¢s new. She just lost her sister a month ago,â⬠Elliot added in a gentle voice. He didnââ¬â¢t need to say how the sister had been lost. Rashel nodded at the girl. She sympathized. There was nothing quite like the shock of first discovering the Night World, when you realized that things like vampires and witches and werewolves were real, and that they were everywhere, joined in one giant secret organization. That anybody could be one, and youââ¬â¢d never know until it was too late. ââ¬Å"Everybody ready? Then letââ¬â¢s go,â⬠Vicky said, and Steve and Nyala got up. Elliot showed them to the door. ââ¬Å"Good luck,â⬠he said. Outside, Vicky led the way to a dark blue car with mud strategically caked on the license plates. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ll drive to the warehouse area,â⬠she said. Rashel was relieved. She was used to walking the city streets at night without being seen-important when you were carrying a rather unconcealable sword-but she wasnââ¬â¢t sure that these other three could manage. It took practice. The drive was silent except for the murmur of Steveââ¬â¢s voice occasionally helping Vicky with directions. They passed through respectable neighborhoods and venerable areas with handsome old buildings until they got to a street where everything changed suddenly. All at once, as if they had crossed some invisible dividing line, the gutters were full of soggy trash and the fences were topped with razor wire. The buildings were government housing projects, dark warehouses, or rowdy bars. Vicky pulled into a parking lot and stopped the car away from the security lights. Then she led them through the knee-high dead weeds of a vacant lot to a street that was poorly lighted and utterly silent. ââ¬Å"This is the observation post,â⬠Vicky whispered, as they reached a squat brick building, a part of the housing project that had been abandoned. Following her, they zigzagged through debris and scrap metal to get to a side door, and then they climbed a dark staircase covered with graffiti to the third floor. Their flashlights provided the only illumination. ââ¬Å"Nice place,â⬠Nyala whispered, looking around. She had obviously never seen anything like it before. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t you think-there may be other people here besides vampires?â⬠Steve gave her a reassuring pat. ââ¬Å"No, itââ¬â¢s okay.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, it looks like even the junkies have abandoned it,â⬠Rashel said, grimly amused. ââ¬Å"You can see the whole street from the window,â⬠Vicky put in shortly. ââ¬Å"Elliot and I were here yesterday watching those warehouses across the street. And last night we saw a guy at the end of the street who looked a lot like a vampire. You know the signs.â⬠Nyala opened her mouth as if to say she didnââ¬â¢t know the signs, but Rashel was already speaking. ââ¬Å"Did you test him?â⬠ââ¬Å"We didnââ¬â¢t want to get that close. Weââ¬â¢ll do it tonight if he shows up again.â⬠ââ¬Å"How do you test them?â⬠Nyala asked. Vicky didnââ¬â¢t answer. She and Steve had pushed aside a couple of rat-chewed mattresses and were unloading the bags and backpacks theyââ¬â¢d brought. Rashel said, ââ¬Å"One way is to shine a flashlight in their eyes. Usually you get eye-shine back-like an animalââ¬â¢s.â⬠ââ¬Å"There are other ways, too,â⬠Vicky said, setting the things she was unloading on the bare boards of the floor. There were ski masks, knives made of both metal and wood, a number of stakes of various sizes, and a mallet. Steve added two clubs made of white oak to the pile. ââ¬Å"Wood hurts them more than metal,â⬠Vicky said to Nyala. ââ¬Å"If you cut them with a steel knife they heal right before your eyes-but cut them with wood and they keep bleeding.â⬠Rashel didnââ¬â¢t quite like the way she said it. And she didnââ¬â¢t like the last thing Vicky was pulling out of her backpack. It was a wooden device that looked a bit like a miniature stock. Two hinged blocks of wood that fit snugly around a personââ¬â¢s wrists and closed with a lock. ââ¬Å"Vampire handcuffs,â⬠Vicky said proudly, seeing her look. ââ¬Å"Made of white oak. Guaranteed to hold any parasite. I brought them from down south.â⬠ââ¬Å"But hold them for what? And what do you need all those little knives and stakes for? It would take hours to kill a vampire with those.â⬠Vicky smiled fiercely. ââ¬Å"I know.â⬠Oh. Rashelââ¬â¢s heart seemed to thump and then sink, and she looked away to control her reaction. She understood what Vicky had in mind now. Torture. ââ¬Å"A quick deathââ¬â¢s too good for them,â⬠Vicky said, still smiling. ââ¬Å"They deserve to suffer-the way they make our people suffer. Besides, we might get some information. We need to know where theyââ¬â¢re keeping the girls they kidnap, and what theyââ¬â¢re doing with them.â⬠ââ¬Å"Vicky.â⬠Rashel spoke earnestly. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s practically impossible to make vampires talk. Theyââ¬â¢re stubborn. When theyââ¬â¢re hurt they just get angry-like animals.â⬠Vicky smirked. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve made some talk. It just depends on what you do, and how long you make it last. Anyway, thereââ¬â¢s no harm in trying.â⬠ââ¬Å"Does Elliot know about this?â⬠Vicky lifted a shoulder defensively. ââ¬Å"Elliot lets me do things my way. I donââ¬â¢t have to tell him every little detail. I was a leader myself, you know.â⬠Helplessly, Rashel looked at Nyala and Steve. And saw that for the first time Nyalaââ¬â¢s eyes had lost their sleepwalking expression. Now she looked awake- and savagely glad. ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"We should try to make the vampire talk. And if he suffers-well, my sister suffered. When I found her, she was almost dead but she could still talk. She told me what it felt like, having all the blood drained out of her body while she was still conscious. She said it hurt. She saidâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Nyala stopped, swallowed, and looked at Vicky. ââ¬Å"I want to help do it,â⬠she said thickly. Steve didnââ¬â¢t say anything, but then from what Rashel knew of him, that was typical. He was a guy of few words. Anyway, he didnââ¬â¢t protest. Rashel felt odd, as if she were seeing the very worst of herself reflected in a mirror. It made herâ⬠¦ ashamed. It left her shaken. But who am I to judge? she thought, turning away. Itââ¬â¢s true that the parasites are evil, all of them. The whole race needs to be wiped out. And Vickyââ¬â¢s right, why should they have a clean death, when they usually donââ¬â¢t give their victims one? Nyala deserves to avenge her sister. ââ¬Å"Unless you object or something,â⬠Vicky said heavily, and Rashel could feel those pale blue eyes on her. ââ¬Å"Unless youââ¬â¢re some kind of vampire sympathizer.â⬠Rashel might have laughed at that, but she wasnââ¬â¢t in a laughing mood. She took a breath, then said without turning around, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s your show. I agreed that you were in charge.â⬠ââ¬Å"Good,â⬠Vicky said, and returned to her work. But the sick feeling in the pit of Rashelââ¬â¢s stomach didnââ¬â¢t go away. She almost hoped that the vampire wouldnââ¬â¢t come. The light, gentle but comforting tone of the poem is clear and the mood set by the scenery being described shows the simplicity of Godââ¬â¢s love. The mother kissing her son and the child sharing this love unknowingly towards other children from the white race evokes a very comforting emotion.à The beams of Godââ¬â¢s love are symbols of suffering. However, the poemââ¬â¢s romanticism was able to mask suffering as holiness when he termed these as the ââ¬Å"beams of love.â⬠Part 2: A Little Girl Lost and The Sick RoseBoth poems talk about losing virginity as a sinful and dreadful situation for a maiden in Blakeââ¬â¢s era. Although the mood of the first starts lightly with a story, it ends drastically with the maidenââ¬â¢s guilt while the latter poemââ¬â¢s tone is rebuking. Blake used the symbol of the rose for a virgin and the color crimson as a sign of something sinful. The worm seems to symbolize the sexual desire of a man which can be also held in reference to the serpent in the Garden of Eden. The tone of the first poem is full of self-pity and guilt while the latterââ¬â¢s tone is very judgmental creating a very tense mood. I believe that these poems are too harsh for women because these do not take into consideration that God is forgiving. The loss of physical innocence does not necessarily mean that a woman cannot redeem herself in the eyes of God. What Are Command of Evidence Questions? What Do They Test? Command of Evidence is one of the new subscores on the SAT.There are 18 total Command of Evidence questions on the test (Reading and Writing together), eight of which will appear on the Writing section.Your raw score out of 18 will be translated into a final subscore out of 15. Command of Evidence questions on the Writing section ask you to improve the ways passages develop information and ideas. You might choose an answer that sharpens an argumentative claim or adds a relevant supporting detail. The three types of Command of Evidence questions that exist in the Writing section are the following (names of categories were provided by me, not the College Board): Type 1: Setting the Stage - Choose the right piece of evidence to include in the passage to set up the information the author presents later. Type 2: Logical Additions - Decide whether the author should add a given sentence to the passage strengthen the argument (and why or why not) or choose the best sentence to add out of four possibilities. Type 3: Data Descriptions - Choose the best way to phrase the passage so that it accurately reflects the data provided. In the next section, Iââ¬â¢ll take you through example questions from each of these categories so you can see exactly how to answer them on the test. Examples of Command of Evidence Questions on Writing In this section, I'll provide real examples and answer explanations for all three categories of Command of Evidence questions. Type 1: Setting the Stage Hereââ¬â¢s an example of the first type of question. Youââ¬â¢re asked to choose the phrase that most effectively introduces information in the passage: We have to decide whether the information flows well with the current phrasing or if ââ¬Å"leading the wayâ⬠should be replaced with one of the other three phrases to make things clearer.Choice B, ââ¬Å"being cleaned and restored,â⬠doesnââ¬â¢t quite fit because it relates to the information before that sentence, not the information that follows in the rest of the paragraph.Itââ¬â¢s also superfluous because the author already stated that artists have been cleaning and restoring the murals. It can be inferred that ââ¬Å"America Tropicalâ⬠is included in this. Choice C, ââ¬Å"at risk of destruction,â⬠is also incorrect because the rest of the paragraph mentions nothing about the mural being at risk of destruction.Itââ¬â¢s just talking about the mural's new status as a tourist attraction. This is an irrelevant answer based on the evidence. Choice D, ââ¬Å"awaiting its moment of appreciation,â⬠almost fits, but itââ¬â¢s still wrong. The mural isnââ¬â¢t AWAITING its moment of appreciation based on the last two sentences. Itââ¬â¢s already being appreciated as a major tourist attraction. Choice A, NO CHANGE, is the only answer that makes sense. The paragraph goes on to support the claim that the mural is ââ¬Å"leading the wayâ⬠by discussing its status as the first restored mural to become a prominent tourist destination and inspiration for cultural preservation. Final Answer: A Another dope painting by Siqueiros (El Museo Nacional de Arte, used under CC by 2.0) Type 2: Logical Additions For this question type, you have to decide whether the author should include a sentence in the passage to reinforce his or her point OR decide which sentence out would make the most sense in the passage.Iââ¬â¢ll give two question examples in this case because there are two different formats that youââ¬â¢ll see for this type of question.Hereââ¬â¢s the first one (using the same part of the passage that we looked at in the last subsection): This question requires a little more context to find the right answer.First, read the passage with the suggested sentence inserted to get a sense of whether or not it should be included (Iââ¬â¢ll wait). When you add the sentence, it feels like an inappropriate interruption that diverts attention from the main focus of the paragraph. It seems repetitive given that we already know the mural is considered a "powerful work."This narrows our options down to the two ââ¬Å"noâ⬠answers, C and D. Is the information in the sentence already given earlier in the passage? Looking back, you can see that it was (this question comes from new SAT sample practice test four if you want to read the whole passage), so C is a possibility. What about D? Well, if the information was in the passage at one point, then the claim IS supported by the passage, so D has to be wrong. Final Answer: C Hereââ¬â¢s another example of the same type of question formatted slightly differently: This time, we have to pick the best sentence out of four choices to insert into the paragraph. As it says in the question, we're looking for the sentence that best supports the authorââ¬â¢s claim that thereââ¬â¢s nothing wrong with nonorganic food. Choice A has nothing to do with the authorââ¬â¢s point, and, in fact, could serve as part of a counterargument (organic foods are more tightly regulated, so theyââ¬â¢re safer for consumers!).We can rule out this one. Choice B could also be a part of a counterargument - organic food is regulated to eliminate artificial ingredients! That's not helping the authorââ¬â¢s case.Get rid of choice B too. Choice C makes sense because it explains how the already small risks associated with ingesting pesticides can easily be eliminated just by washing or peeling nonorganic fruits and vegetables before eating them. This takes the authorââ¬â¢s argument further and reinforces the main point of the paragraph. Choice D is incorrect because itââ¬â¢s talking about the widespread use of pesticides, and the author is looking to deemphasize the impact of pesticide use. This answer can be eliminated, and weââ¬â¢re left with Choice C! Final Answer: C Organic food successfully tapped into the flourishing market of suburbanites trying to one-up each other based on ultimately meaningless lifestyle choices. Type 3: Data Descriptions The final type of evidence question on the Writing section will ask you to look at data and make sure it lines up with the information in the passage.Hereââ¬â¢s an example: This question is simple if you read carefully, but itââ¬â¢s easy to get confused if youââ¬â¢re rushing.I actually read the passage incorrectly at first and thought the answer key had made a mistake! This question is careless mistake central. Letââ¬â¢s look at the choices. In the original version of the passage, the descriptions of where each term is used do not correspond to the information on the map.The passage says that ââ¬Å"sodaâ⬠is the term most commonly used in the middle and western regions of the US while the map shows that ââ¬Å"popâ⬠is most common in these regions. The first term in the passage should be ââ¬Å"popâ⬠if all the other information is kept the same, so the answer is either B or C.The original passage goes on to say that ââ¬Å"popâ⬠is most common in southern states, which we know to be false.According to the map, itââ¬â¢s actually ââ¬Å"coke.â⬠The only answer that starts with ââ¬Å"popâ⬠and ââ¬Å"cokeâ⬠is choice C, so thatââ¬â¢s the one we want! Final Answer: C What do you call this stuff? If you answered "fizz juice," you'll never belong anywhere. Tips for Answering Command of Evidence Questions on SAT Writing Here are a few key Command of Evidence tips for when you come across these types of questions in the Writing section. Tip #1: Plug in the Answer If youââ¬â¢re given several different options for the appropriate phrase to insert, start reading one or two sentences before the question number shows up in the paragraph.Read through that part of the paragraph in its modified form, and then continue reading for a sentence or two afterward to see if it really makes sense in the flow of the passage (and based on the facts presented in the paragraph). Command of evidence questions never take place in a vacuum, so itââ¬â¢s critical to read the surrounding text to make sure you have the right answer.Plugging in the potential answer and reading it through carefully is the best way to assess the viability of your choice. Tip #2: Find Direct Support The whole point of these questions is to test your ability to pick out answers that make the most sense based on the information in the passage. For every choice you make, you should be able to find part of the passage (or figure) that directly supports your answer. This is a good way to double-check that you didnââ¬â¢t make any unfounded assumptions (or reading mistakes) to arrive at your answer. Tip #3: Read Carefully The Writing section requires strict attention to detail, so try not to rush, and double-check your answers by reading them over again in the context of the passage.Pay attention to the tone and flow of the passage as a whole. There are a few questions where youââ¬â¢ll need to refer to evidence earlier in the passage to confirm your answers, like the question we did in the Logical Additions category. The sentence didnââ¬â¢t make sense because it repeated information that was already stated earlier in the passage. Working methodically on these questions will prevent you from missing out on details or switching parts of the question around by accident. If you come across a data interpretation question, you should be completely sure of what the graph or chart is telling you before answering the question. Some of the SAT's data representations are more nuanced than you might expect. You must become one with the data. It's the only way. Conclusion Command of Evidence is a subscore category on the SAT that spans across the Reading and Writing sections. Command of Evidence questions show up in the Writing section of the SAT in several different forms. The three varieties I've identified are: Setting the Stage (questions that ask you to choose the best phrase to insert to make information flow logically) Logical Additions (questions where you have to decide whether it makes sense to add something to the passage or not) Data Descriptions (questions that refer to charts or graphs and ask you to ensure that the information in the passage matches up with the data provided) A few tips for answering these types of questions are: Tip #1: Plug in the Answer Tip #2: Find Direct Support Tip #3: Read the Passage Carefully For Command of Evidence questions, finding the right answer is all about attention to detail and strong reading comprehension skills. Be sure to practice reading passages and paying attention to context so you can make the correct choices based on the evidence at hand. What's Next? This Act does not define what damage is or what may be assumed to be damage under certain circumstances, which has led to courts construing the term freely. The Act also does not limit damage to large scale life threatening destruction of property, small acts like smearing mud in a police cellââ¬â¢s walls is also considered a criminal offence under this law. The maximum punishment for an aggravated and arson criminal damage is life imprisonment. All other offences covered under this act attract a maximum penalty of ten years. Horaceââ¬â¢s Liability In the first case scenario, Horace knowingly tinkers with the shopââ¬â¢s lock so that it may temporarily refuse to open. He causes this damage with the intent of making it possible for his boss to attend the Tennis Finals at Wimbledon. However, Horaceââ¬â¢s well intentioned act is not appreciated by his boss who would rather open his shop than attend the match. He (the owner) is forced to close shop the whole day since he cannot secure a new part for the lock. According to the law, what Horace has committed is a simple criminal damage.... According to the law, what Horace has committed is a simple criminal damage. S.1(1) of the Criminal Damage Act 1971 states that an individual is guilty of a criminal damage offence if he or she recklessly or intentionally destroys or damages property that belongs to another without any lawful excuse. Horace causes temporary damage to the shopââ¬â¢s lock so that it can stay closed on the day of the tennis finals at Wimbledon. He has committed an offence by knowingly damaging property that dos not belong to him (Ashworth, 1991). However, Horace did believe that he was doing his boss a favour by tinkering with the padlock. His action may have a lawful excuse since he believed that his bossââ¬â¢s attending to the shop was just as important as attending the tennis finals at Wimbledon. Under section 5 part 1 of the Criminal Damage Act 1971, a lawful excuse may exist if at the time of the damaging act the person accused of the offence ââ¬Å"believed that the person or persons whom he believed to be entitled to consent to the destruction of or damage to the property in question had so consented, or would have so consented to it if he or they had known of the destruction or damage and its circumstancesâ⬠(Crown Prosecution Services, 2011). Part b of the same subsection allows for lawful excuse if the accused party caused damage or destruction to property so as to protect Mikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03338397782616711651noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8597870806389057255.post-84312526151433667102020-01-26T06:51:00.001-08:002020-01-26T06:51:03.039-08:00PESTEL Analysis of NokiaPESTEL Analysis of Nokia Business is all about improving, adjusting and surviving and companies face with diverse environment which is beyond the control of the business such as Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental and Legal, which is changing rapidly, rather than being rigid. It is very important for business organizations to be sensitive and aware of its business environment in which it operates. Business environment refers to those factors and variables that can influence and affect operation of a business organization. For instance, Nokia is one of the successful mobile phone companies that was affected by the technological environment and have experienced a significant fiasco. Big market leaders such as Apple and Android crushed Nokia, however it was recognized that Nokia is adaptive company and they try their force in another field. But all Nokiaââ¬â¢s efforts to adapt wasnââ¬â¢t so powerful, so company fail in adaptation process. This example may show how Nokia encountered with technological environment and made effort to adapt that challenge. So in this essay I am going to write about PESTLE analysis which could show diverse external effects on business and for the better understanding here is video about PESTEL analysis[1]. PESTEL analysis Francis J. Aguilar: In 1967, there was a mention of Aguilar in Scanning the Business Environment, where he discussed the environmental factors affecting a business. He gave them the acronym ETPS to indicate the Economic, Technical, Political, and Social factors. PESTEL analysis is a simple and effective tool used in situation analysis to identify the key external (macro environment level) forces that might affect an organization. These forces can create both opportunities and threats for an organization. According to the research three main and essential business environments Political, Technological, and Environmental that managers should pay attention and adjust to them. The political environment could change as a result of the actions and policies of governments at all levels, from the local level to the federal level. It is becoming very important issue, which includes globalization and creates a risk. Businesses need to be prepared to deal with the fallouts of government politics. As for example, aviation industry have been affected by Political environment, Malaysia airlines flight MH17 have been crashed in Ukraine with 298 passengers and crew. It is the second accident that happened after MH 370, which went missing. Day of the vision of accident Boeing 777 presented the Defense Ministry of Russia there have led a number of arguments in favor of the version that the plane was shot down by a Ukrainian military. According to the Office, Boeing, while over the Donetsk region, has deviated from the corridor of the airway and was at 14 km to the north. Further, flying past Gorlovka liner tried to return to the route, but the boundaries of his airway did not have time to get, and was crashed of its limits. Ukraine nowadays has political issues and civil war, and this all circumstances has impact on aviation industry in Malaysia, MH370s disappearance had a dramatic impact on its first-quarter results, with cancelled bookings helping push the company to a loss of 443 million ringgit (US$140 million). State fund Khazanah Nasional, which holds the airlines purse strings, said in June it would announce a plan to revive the carrier within six to 12 months. Malaysia Airlines had already raked in losses amounting to US$1.3 billion over the previous three years. So all this political games may arouse risk for aviation industry and bring considerable material losses. All in all, technology has always been and continues to be the greatest change agent of our civilization. And technology is leading the most important revolution in business. It is changing at a fast pace and ità ´s creating new trends in the marketplace. (Australian authorities have demanded an explanation about the Russian plane crash in Ukraine, 2014) According to Harvard Business Review 3D printers will change the world and business as well. 3D printer machine that produces objects of any shape, on the spot and as needed, really is ushering in a new era. Goods will be infinitely more customized, because altering them wonââ¬â¢t require retooling, only tweaking the instructions in the software. Creativity in meeting individualsââ¬â¢ needs will come to the fore, just as quality control did in the age of rolling out sameness. These first-order implications will cause businesses all along the supply, manufacturing, and retailing chains to rethink their strategies and operations. And a second-order implication will have even greater impact. As 3-D printing takes hold, the factors that have made China the workshop of the world will lose much of their force. China has grabbed outsourced-manufacturing contracts from every mature economy by pushing the mass-manufacturing model to its limit. It not only aggregates enough demand to cre ate unprecedented efficiencies of scale but also minimizes a key cost: labor. China will have to give up on being the mass-manufacturing powerhouse of the world. This new technology will change again how the business leans. (3D Printers Will Soon Change The World, If Its Not Strangled In A Lawyered Up World, 2014). Another factor as Environmental may affect to business and research shows that the environmental impact of doing business costs the global economy $4.7 trillion a year. For example, severe floods in Australia in 2010 to 2011 resulted in more than $350 million in claims to re-insurer Munich Re, which contributed to a 38 percent quarterly drop in profit for the company. The same period of extreme weather in Australia contributed to a loss of $245 million. Furthermore water is one of the consequential environmental factor that impacts on business. Water management is of critical concern to business, from access issues that disrupt production, to tightening legislation over water quality and increasing costs associated with allocations. In a recent interview with theFinancial Times, Nestlà © Chairman Peter Brabeck suggested water access and management now comprise a more urgent concern for contemporary business even than climate change, which gains so much political attention. So, above mentioned macro environmental factors that is modifying swiftly will invent influences that could bring success or fail and different companies went over it in their own strategy. There is examples of case studies, such as Amway in China, Jessopââ¬â¢s photographic retailer. Following to the article in Harvard Business Review, the president of Amway Company Doug DeVos is reinventing the business to succeed in China. One of the biggest lessons that the company learned that as they have grown around the world is that a true understanding of the market- place, including culture, the economics, the politics, and the people, is essential. Amway entered Asia in 1974, with the opening of Hong Kong and by 1998 China was a $200 million operation and growing fast. However, Chinese government was becoming unhappy with the actions of some direct sellers. Issues related to product quality, reliability, and our trust were rampant. Chinese officials needed to protect consumers and to put a stop to unethical practices. But the action government pursued was extreme: outlawing direct selling and punishing legitimate as well as unethical sellers. And now it appeared that Amway could be put out of business, despite their commitment to and investment to China operation. Howe ver Amway started to change operations to accommodate Chineââ¬â¢s new regulations. Company created a physical stores, something that they had never done before. That meant selling products to people who came in off the street again not their usual way of doing business. Typically when Amway enters to a new country, they import products from United States. But for China they manufacture goods there, so company have changed their entire distributer compensation system. Also Amway couldnââ¬â¢t rely on word-of-mouth that drives direct sales, choosing to do brand advertising. In short they had to overhaul nearly everything. In 2005 legislation was passed that would allow Amway to return to direct sales business model. Company received new license to do business in China in 2006. And today China is largest market, with more than $4 billion in annual sales. From this we could recognize that Chinese political environment create risk and changed business structure. (ââ¬Å"Amwayââ¬â ¢s president on reinventing the business to succeed in Chinaâ⬠, 2014, p. 41-45). Second, the company is the UKââ¬â¢s premier photographic retailer operating from over 200 stores around the UK. The photography and imaging business has experienced considerable change in recent years. Technology has beenat the front of this change. New digital cameras and digital media enable ordinary people to take high-quality photographs. These images can be quickly edited and altered. The digital camera market has expanded quickly as a result. For example, as more mobile phones come fitted with good quality built-in cameras, sales in standalone digital cameras have begun to fall. The development of the internet is also having an impact on the market. More customers are using the internet for shopping. Increasingly, people use social media to share images online on sites such as Facebook and Flicker. Many people upload images from their mobile phones onto a social media site. By consuming and sharing images in this way, there is less demand for print copies. Sales of digital p rints are declining by 10% a year. Following to case study there some technological solutions that company has done: Jessopââ¬â¢s have come up with technological solutions in response to these changes. The company is responding by providing products and services that reflect the way that customers take, use and distribute photos: Customers are now able to print images taken from social media or other websites. These images can be printed in a variety of sizes and shapes. They can be compiled in photo books. Selected images can be printed on canvas, acrylic and aluminum. Customers can incorporate their images in gifts such as calendars, posters and greetings cards. Jessopââ¬â¢s has an integrated service for images created on mobile phones and loaded onto social media sites. These developments, alongside a wider range of products, improved online functionality and consumer finance with an instant decision, have resulted in rapid growth of Jessopââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ online business. In fact, its .com business has trebled in size over the last 3 years. By using wide-format printers, customers will be able to have wall art printed on site within the hour. New kiosk technology will enable customers to convert old videos and films to digital formats, with results saved to Blu-ray Disc or DVD. Finally, company abided technological environment and tried to stay in market. In conclusion, market leaders and new organizations strive to build a strong and sustainable strategy which could yield prosper to their internal environment of business. While they should take into account external environment which is unpredictable and could ruin companyââ¬â¢s future or establish benefit to new level of development. The stationery sector is a cluster of many sectors out of which the most prominent and important probably is the writing instruments Industry. The two most important tools of it are pen and paper. Other materials like pencil, rulers, writing pads, erasers etc also play an active role which are relevant items useful for commercial and office use. Even with the advancement age and rule of technology the writing instrument industry still holds a large share of the market. Over a period this industry has seen growth in the domestic market and is now is all set to become an export oriented market. For long period China has said to be ruling the export market in Writing Instruments and as per the source China alone exports around Rs. 5000 ââ¬â 6000 crore worth goods. India had not entered much in the export field uptil now because itââ¬â¢s domestic demand was very high, at present Indiaââ¬â¢s current export share is barely Rs. 200 crore but now the industry is planning to expand further in itââ¬â¢s supply and infrastructure thus enabling them entry into the foreign markets. Foreign buyers of writing instrument also have been looking for an option. Uptil now they were buying their goods from china. Chinese pens are good looking and cheap but they lack long shell life and canââ¬â¢t provide a good writing experience. India will serve to be the best possible option for them as it is the only country whose manufacturing cost is almost same as China. If the Indian industries assure product life this is where the Indian manufacturers and exporters will have an edge over china. But the major hindrance of Indian writing industry to grow still remains i. e though it is among the Asian leaders for supplying stationery itââ¬â¢s international competition is threat to itââ¬â¢s Writing Instrument Industry and may stunt the growth of the market within. Chinese revolution in stationery was indeed a threat to the other nations and India is no exception to it. China even today spoils the global buyers with innovative and inexpensive creations and is said to capture a huge part of the market. Though slowly the writing instruments industry is achieving a well-developed and mature status and quality has also started playing an important role but still it may take few years more before the end of domination of Cheap quality Chinese productââ¬â¢s rule in writing instrument sector. Innovation and top quality goods at competitive prices are the major and only implementations through which the Chinese dominance can be put to an end. New ideas and technological advances in the writing instruments sector should be put into practice to survive in this competitive market. Though gradually and slowly the market is recovering from buying these cheap goods and it is turning out to be a brand loyal market than the old conventional market, which use to live on substitute or counterfeit goods. Also the governmentââ¬â¢s goal of reaching towards 100% literacy is bound to increase the demand. The Indian market today is still on the path of discovering new niches with ergonomic designed products, promotional marketing items and luxury items but in the coming years it is bound to grow tremendously not only domestically but also in itââ¬â¢s exports immerging as world leaders in Writing Instruments. TITLE OF ASSIGNMENT: What role does the WTO play in international business? Argue the case that the WTO is either helpful or a hindrance to international trade, giving particular examples to support your case. 1. As economies have become more open, countries become more dependent on one another. Settlement of trade disputes is an important role of WTO, which is one of WTOs original intentions (WTO, 2009). Unfair trade practices between nations may be brought to a WTO panel (normally consists of three persons proposed by the WTO Secretariat) to seek for a resolution. All stages of deliberations are limited by time, and the process binds the WTOs rulings (Daniels, 2000). If the offending nation fails to comply with the judgement decided by WTO panel, its trading partners (the offended nations) have the right to compensation; if this penalty is ineffective, then the offended nations have the right to impose countervailing sanctions on the offending nation (WTO, 2009). A good example is the tariff duty US imposed on EU products in response to the EUs reluctance to abolish its banana import restrictions (Hanrahan 2001). This indicates member nations confidence in effectiveness of the WTO dispute-resolution process. â⬠¢Monitoring national trade policies through the Trade Policy Review Mechanism (TRPM). WTO also plays a role in the periodic review of the member nations trade policies, including two parts: First, to monitor whether or not and to what extent member nations have been following the disciplines and the commitments. Counseling helps people to develop with the emotional concern in a safe and trusting relationship. For example, one of the staff In the Restaurant that I work In was worried about his father being ill in India. We will write a custom essay sample on Difference Between Counselling and Mentoring or any similar topic only for you Order Now He wanted to go and see his father to see how he was progressing with medical treatment. He was also worried that his father is old at the age of 85 and that he might die. He was also worried whether they had enough money in India to look after his father well. So all the staff supported him by counseling and asking him questions about his father and his family in India. We asked him whether he had enough money to send to India for his fatherââ¬â¢s treatment. We asked him whether he had enough money to pay for the trip to India. We asked him which hospital his father was in and Is It a good hospital. We asked him what kind of treatment his father Is getting. We asked him whether can afford to take time off work to evils India. According professional counselors, counseling is about asking questions and not serially giving answers or making suggestions. For example, if we were to suggest that he go to India tomorrow and then find out that his father recovers fairly quickly, our friend may feel that his Journey was waste of time and when he was to come back he might blame us for him loosing two weeks pay from work and also for wasting money on the trip. Thatââ¬â¢s why when counseling we donââ¬â¢t make suggestions but let the person decide for themselves as what they should do about the problem. This makes sure that they are responsible for their decisions and consequences. Mentoring Mentoring allows a person to turn to another more experienced person on a regular basis to develop their own skills and ability In the work place. For example, when I started working in the restaurant I had no idea how to work as a waiter, so I was told by the management that I could talk to a colleague who had been a waiter for three years in India and ELK. He explained to me what a good waiter does and how he treats the customer. Mentoring encourages a person to do whatââ¬â¢s right for them. For example, my mentor told me that the customer is very important, so I decided make sure that I talk to the customers about curries, about India and about News stories. I want them feel they are my friends and that I know them as a friend. For me mentoring provided regular time to talk to my mentor and discuss new ways work shift I usually have a discussion with my mentor about how I worked each right. I feel safe to discuss things to do with developing the business with my mentor rather than with my manager. My mentor and I have developed a relationship which helps me with my professional development through support and understanding. My mentor and I have become more like friends at the work. Answer: Open Letter To The Manager Rampar Trading Dear Sir, I will be taking the approach of retaining and developing the skills of the employees working under me. I would be facilitating new ideas and knowledge of improving the skills of the employees so that I can be able to understand the fresh talent and provide them the motivation and will be engaging in a proper way. My talent development style is quite different from the others working in my organization. I should be recommending the understanding the skills and knowledge of both the employers and the employees in developing and retaining the best talent for the organization. My approach should be that I would be acting as the leader and facilitator in understanding the approach of developing and managing the new talent for the organizational benefit. My PDP is influenced by the development of the workplace skills plan which is the key tool in shaping the all round skills of the employees as well the employers working in Rampar Trading. MY PD is also influenced by the application of CCFOs in organization. The development of the ETD strategies and its implementation has also influenced my personal PDP portfolio. My PDP portfolio is also influenced by the development of the ATR which is important for organizing and analyzing the information from the employees to gain effective knowledge from them. The principle of theory of change will influence my PDP portfolio as this will help me to gain my learning experience which provides positive results for the organization. It will help me make difference of linking between the inputs and outputs recognized. The principles which have influenced my PDP portfolio should be the diversity management at the organizations which helps me to develop and maintain diverse culture for the employees to work in. The practices of occupational approach, job design and training have influenced my PDP portfolio. As a facilitator I would be implementing skill development facilitation in order to provide proper planning, implementation and training to the employees in the organization. I would like to implement CCFOs for resolving the issues and improving the skills and knowledge of the employees. I would like to implement WSP. I would also like to implement ETD in organization. I would like to implement change theory, on the job training and mentoring as well. Thanking You Yours faithfully Pieter van Ellewee Bibliography Al Ariss, A., Cascio, W.F. and Paauwe, J., 2014. Essay What makes an effective senior leadership team (SLT)? The nature of an effective a senior leadership team (SLT) will be the topic of this essay. The idea of team work and various models of SLT will be covered linking their roles, strategy, values and pitfalls. I will interlace this essay with some personal experience and relevant literature Belbin and Fullan to conclude through an historical analogy, my personal understanding of what SL T represents. The combination of words in the sentence ââ¬Å"Effective Senior Leadership Teamâ⬠brings together an amalgam of important and decisive words, which individually symbolise strong individual qualities. None the less, one word effectively links the whole sentence into one, ââ¬Å"teamâ⬠. According Belbin (1993), the word ââ¬Å"teamâ⬠stems from the idea of sport and play where individual players hold specific positions in a given task in sync with a sense of reliability and trust. A School Leadership Team is usually constituted of the head teacher and deputy head. However, depending on the size of the school, the team vary in size, often, Assistant Head Teachers or Senior Teachers hold particular responsibilities such as leading a specific the key stages or assessment across the school. The team may also include the Special Needs Co-coordinator (SENCO) and increasingly the School Business Manager (SBM). According to an independent study into school leadership (DfES, 2007) five essential ââ¬Å"modelsâ⬠of SLT can be put in place (see diagram 1. 1), so to hold a positive impact on the positive childrenââ¬â¢s attainment. However, via the progress and creation of new leadership models, the right leadership behaviour can be cultivated (DfES, 2007, see index page 8). Figure 1. 1 Five models of School Leadership [pic] It is interesting to note from this diagram, the overlapping of the different models as described in DfES. My previous schoolââ¬â¢s head teacher worked in collaboration with another school and where necessary, implemented similar strategies to both establishments. Fullan (2010:14) emphasises the importance of ââ¬Å"network and system engagedâ⬠, a process whereby a school in no longer introverted but actively engage with exterior influences thus seeking a ââ¬Å"two-way partnershipâ⬠which helps develop and strengthen a collaborative culture within the school and beyond. My understanding of the role and responsibility of an SLT are to establish the strategic direction of a school and then manage it, to lead any changes and generally make sure that the school is doing the best it can for its stakeholders. In order to achieve the latter, Belbin highlights (2009, p1), ââ¬Å"team role behaviourâ⬠as an important aspect in the constitution of the well functioning team and defines role preference as contextually mutable, in contrast, character that stems from the personality trait of an individual is less likely to change. He further defines (ibis, 1993) six specific roles that as a whole constitute our behaviour in a group or a team. In other words, until the roles are clearly defined within a team, instability appears to be omnipresent within the group. Belbin (1993) describes one of the six elements as ââ¬Å"role learningâ⬠, the identifying roles of others and, the array of roles attributed to oneself. It is fair to say that once each role is clearly established within the group, confidence is installed. This principal appears to be an essential tool in the construction of an effective team as I have experience in my managerial work where the importance of each role enabled the team to perform to their up most. Fullan (2010, Principal: 14) stresses the notion of a good head teacher to have a keen ââ¬Å"bias for actionâ⬠, but strikingly cautious ââ¬Å"in tending to relationshipâ⬠. I believe, this is where, it is essential to remind ourselves that any team at all is constituted of human being, thus involving different cultures, views and experience. However, a head teacher generally represents the school and its vision thus acting as a leader just as Mc Call and Lawlor envisage the qualities of a leader to be a visionary, to have a firm idea of what lies ahead with a plan of action aiming at a specific goal (Pound, 2008). This coupled with strong interpersonal skills, commitment, resilience, positive outlook, supportive and approachable with the will to teer the boat in the mist of change and novelty (Pound, 2008). However, it is also essential to reminds ourselves that a Head Teacher is part of a team and as Fullan (issue March/April 2010: 14) describes, the principal is ââ¬Å"second only to the teacher in his or her impact on the studentâ⬠. In further support to this argument, Belbin (2004) would argue that not one person could fulfil all aspect attribu ted to the definition of an ideal leader/manager, but that a team could. Other unconnected negative form of pressure should also be considered when dealing with a Senior Leadership Team. Fullan (2010, spb-161129: p3) talks about the various exterior form of negative pressure, such as a ââ¬Å"blind sense of urgency, pressure without means, punitive pressure, groupthink and win-lose competitionâ⬠that are rooted in the system ââ¬Å"culture which serves the forces of inertiaâ⬠. He illustrates his point with a ââ¬Å"well intentionedâ⬠US policy, ââ¬Å"No Child Left Behind Actâ⬠that served an opposite effect by putting unnecessary pressure in forcing schools, and consequently SLT, to implement an ideology without any well founded strategy, thus creating a ââ¬Å"blind sense of urgencyâ⬠(Fullan, 2010,spb-161129 p3). Drucker (2001) argues that as much as decision making is acknowledged to be an important part of management, it is often the case that we miss out on the essential point by trying too hard to solve a problem rather than ask the right questions. He (2001: ) further mentions that ââ¬Å"it is the people who work in the business that really count. Treating employees badly will inevitably come to haunt us in the long runâ⬠. This would essentially result in creating a blame culture where as Fullan (2010, spb-161129: p4) highlights, punitive pressure from authoritarian regimes only serve the purpose of creating a counterproductive team that generates an atmosphere of mistrust and individualism. However, Fullan (2010, spb-161129: p5) also suggests that no pressure is not the solution as it induces idolatry, but motivation pressure on the other hand can be a very powerful tool to create a ââ¬Å"sense of focused urgency, partnerships and peers, transparency of data, non punitive accountability and irresistible synergyâ⬠. SLT can introduce strategies such as the ââ¬Å"Six Thinking Hatsâ⬠by Edward de Bono as part of their school improvement scheme. De Bonosââ¬â¢s method is based on the brain chemicals studies, which demonstrate that different brain chemicals are released through various thoughts process, the method enables each team member to use their individual best by tapping into their own experience, intelligence and information, leaving aside their ego in the process thus creating ââ¬Å"parallel thinkingâ⬠(Bono, 2000). Bono (2000) argues that arguments are negative and slow down the process of productive thinking. Whitty (2002) calls attention to the importance of school improvement, as a fundamental rule, lies mainly with the responsibility of the school itself. This in my view, brings back to the front the spirit of team work but also the value of delegating tasks according to ones best abilities or interest. Rodd (2006, p87) highlights that ââ¬Å"delegation involves having confidence in the staff and their ability to act as responsible professionalsâ⬠. I would like to conclude with an analogy with Napoleonââ¬â¢s avant-garde strategies, written by Robert Greene in ââ¬Å"Descent of Powerâ⬠, which I thought mirrored somewhat De Bono, Fullan and Belbin ideologies. Napoleon made one of the greatest discoveries in the history of warfare namely that structure is strategy. The structure of your group, of your army, is what gives it speed and mobility, creates its tone, rhythm and way of actionâ⬠(Greene, 2008: 1). Napoleon distributed power amongst his ranks and enabled them to make their own decision in line with his philosophy (Greene, 2008). This would be supported by Quinn (Fiddler, 2002: P9) who says ââ¬Å"A strategy is the pattern or plan that integrates an organizationââ¬â¢s major goals, policies, and action sequences into a cohesive wholeâ⬠. Therefore, I concur with Fidler in thinking that to construct an effective SLT team similar values that reflect not only a planning for the near future but also a vision of the long term future thus foreseeing possible obstacles along the way. The book is a product of Cambridge University press. It talks about the rise of Chinas economy and the challenges the same went through during the reforms of its economic structure. The core of this book arises when Justin introduces chinas reforms and later on lists down its gratifications and drawbacks, giving recommendations for the latter. He gives a clear parody of how the land reform was implemented after a three-year agricultural crisis. This came about after China ignored prevailing theories and opted for the successive dual-track reform, initiated in 1978. The introduction of family planning policy played a major role in the decline of population density, hence food production per capita. This helped China to be self-sufficient. Several theories opposed the new system, examples being the traditional economic theory and the orthodox theory. Extensive geographical areas and different farming practises made supervision of agricultural production difficult. Food insecurity emerged with the rise in consumption of non-staple food and industrialization of rural areas. Agricultural production is not a major issue since population cannot increase by more than 2 % ( Lin 165).Health, education and social services is regressive in rural areas, hence the need to improve farmers income. This is an interestingly informative production because of how Justin describes the reform process. The book is highly sarcastic in its palatial depiction of the eminence and prejudices of the new reform. This links him to other critics of Chinas economic reform, including Brown Lester and Madison Angus, just to mention but a few. As Justin recommends, infrastructure must be improved to reduce transaction cost. However, would building a unified national market only discourage farmers in rural areas? Meeting the Crusader army west of Tiberias on July 3, Saladin engaged in a running battle as it moved towards the town. Surrounded during the night, the Crusaders, who were short on water, were unable to break out. In the resulting fight, the bulk of their army was destroyed or captured. Saladins victory opened the way for the recapture of Jerusalem later that year. This resulted in the Kingdom of Jerusalem being encircled by a unified enemy for the first time in its history. Attacking the Crusader state in 1177, Saladin was engaged by Baldwin IV at the Battle of Montgisard. The resulting fight saw Baldwin, who was suffering from leprosy, lead a charge that shattered Saladins center and put the Ayyubids to rout. In the wake of the battle, an uneasy truce existed between the two sides. Succession Issues Following Baldwins death in 1185, his nephew Baldwin V assumed the throne.à Only a child, his reign proved brief as he died a year later. As the Muslim states in the region were uniting, there was increasing dissension in Jerusalem with the elevation of Guy of Lusignan to the throne. Claiming the throne through his marriage to Sibylla, mother of the late child-king Baldwin V, Guys ascension was supported by Raynald of Chatillon and the military orders such as the Knights Templar.à Known as the court faction, they were opposed by the nobles faction. This group was led by Raymond III of Tripoli, who had been Baldwin Vs regent,à and who were angered by the move. Tensions quickly escalated between the two parties and civil war loomed as Raymond left the city and rode to Tiberias.à Civil war loomed as Guy considered besieging Tiberias andà was only avoided through mediation by Balian of Ibelin. Despite this, Guys situation remained tenuous as Raynald repeatedly violated the truce with Saladin by attacking Muslim trade caravans in Oultrejordain and threatening to march on Mecca. This came to a head when his men assaulted a large caravan traveling north from Cairo. In the fighting, his troops killed many of the guards, captured the merchants, and stole the goods. Operating within in the terms of the truce, Saladin sent envoys to Guy seeking compensation and redress. Reliant on Raynald to maintain his power, Guy, who conceded that they were in the right, was forced to send them away unsatisfied, despite knowing that it would mean war. To the north, Raymond elected to conclude a separate peace with Saladin to protect his lands. Saladin on the Move This deal backfired when Saladin requested permission for his son, Al-Afdal, to lead a force through Raymonds lands. Compelled to allow this, Raymond saw Al-Afdals men enter Galilee and meet a Crusader force at Cresson on May 1. In the battle that ensured, the outnumbered Crusader force, led byà Gerard de Ridefort, was effectively destroyed with only three men surviving.à In the wake of the defeat, Raymond left Tiberias and rode to Jerusalem. Calling his allies to assemble, Guy hoped to strike before Saladin could invade in force. Renouncing his treaty with Saladin, Raymond fully reconciled with Guy and a Crusader army of around 20,000 men formed near Acre. This included a mix a of knights and light cavalry as well as around 10,000 infantry along with mercenaries and crossbowmen from the Italian merchant fleet. Advancing, they occupied a strong position near the springs at Sephoria. Possessing a force nearly the size of Saladins, the Crusaders had defeated earlier invasions by holding strong positions with reliable water sources while allowing the heat to cripple the enemy (Map). Saladins Plan Aware of past failings, Saladin sought to lure Guys army away from Sephoria so that it could be defeated in open battle. To accomplish this, he personally led an attack against Raymonds fortress at Tiberias on July 2 while his main army remained at Kafr Sabt. This saw his men quickly penetrate the fortress and trap Raymonds wife, Eschiva, in the citadel. That night, the Crusader leaders held a war council to determine their course of action. While the majority was for pressing on to Tiberias, Raymond argued for remaining in the position at Sephoria, even if it meant losing his fortress. Though the precise details of this meeting are not known, it is believed that Gerard and Raynald argued strenuously for an advance and indicated that Raymonds suggestion that they hold their position was cowardly. Guy elected to push on in the morning. Marching out on July 3, the vanguard was led by Raymond, the main army by Guy, and the rearguard by Balian, Raynald, and the military orders. Moving slowly and under constant harassment by Saladins cavalry, they reached the springs at Turan (six miles away) around noon. Concentrating around the spring, the Crusaders eagerly took water. The Armies Meet Though Tiberias was still nine miles away, with no reliable water en route, Guy insisted on pressing on that afternoon. Under increasing attacks from Saladins men, the Crusaders reached a plain by the twin hills of the Horns of Hattin by mid-afternoon. Advancing with his main body, Saladin began attacking in force and ordered the wings of his army to sweep around the Crusaders. Attacking, they surrounded Guys thirsty men and cut off their line of retreat back to the springs at Turan. Realizing that it would be difficult to reach Tiberias, the Crusaders shifted their line of advance in an attempt to reach the springs at Hattin which were around six miles away. Under increasing pressure, the Crusader rearguard was forced to halt and give battle near the village of Meskana, stopping the entire armys advance. Though advised to fight on to reach water, Guy elected to halt the advance for the night. Surrounded by the enemy, the Crusader camp possessed a well but it was dry. Disaster Throughout the night, Saladins men taunted the Crusaders and set fire to the dry grass on the plain. The next morning, Guys army awoke to blinding smoke. This came from fires set by Saladins men to screen their actions and increase the Crusaders misery. With his men weakened and thirsty, Guy broke camp and ordered an advance towards the springs of Hattin. Despite having sufficient numbers to break through the Muslim lines, fatigue and thirst badly weakened the cohesion of the Crusader army. Advancing, the Crusaders were effectively counterattacked by Saladin. Two charges by Raymond saw him break through the enemy lines, but once outside the Muslim perimeter, he lacked enough men to influence the battle. As a result, he retreated from the field. Desperate for water, much of Guys infantry attempted a similar breakout, but failed. Forced onto the Horns of Hattin, the majority of this force was destroyed. Without infantry support, Guys trapped knights were unhorsed by Muslim archers and forced to fight on foot. Though fighting with determination, they were driven onto the Horns. After three charges against the Muslim lines failed, the survivors were forced to surrender. Aftermath Precise casualties for the battle are not known, but it resulted in the destruction of the majority of the Crusader army. Among those captured were Guy and Raynald. While the former was treated well, the latter was personally executed by Saladin for his past transgressions. Also lost in the fighting was a relic of the True Cross which was sent to Damascus. Quickly advancing in the wake of his victory, Saladin captured Acre, Nablus, Jaffa, Toron, Sidon, Beirut, and Ascalon in rapid succession. Moving against Jerusalem that September, it was surrendered by Balian on October 2. The defeat at Hattin and subsequent loss of Jerusalem led to the Third Crusade. Beginning in 1189, it saw troops under Richard the Lionheart, Frederick I Barbarossa, and Philip Augustus advance on the Holy Land. In this paper, a comparison of two short stories is provided as an illustration of Johnson's point in elucidating the meaning of "just representations of general nature. The literary texts included in the comparative analysis are "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner and "Luck" by Mark Twain. The choice for these texts is motivated mainly by the 'level of representativeness of each.' That is, Faulkner's short story is identified as more universal in its theme, while Twain's equally entertaining short story differs from Faulkner's because of its unique quality. The discussion and analysis posits, then, that "A Rose" is an example of a literary work that possesses the "representativeness" quality that Johnson talks about because of its utilization of society's hostility of an individual because Emily chose to deviate from the norms of her community. Meanwhile, Twain's "Luck" lacks the universality that Faulkner's work has because luck is an uncommon phenomenon, not universally experienced by people throughout their life, as opposed to what was illustrated in the life of the story's primary subject, Lt. Gen. Arthur Scoresby. Emily Grierson is depicted as a social outcast in the community that she lived in, setting the mood early on in Faulkner's short story. The relationship between the community and Emily was one that bordered between hostility and indifference: while most of the people in the community had considered Emily as an individual who lived in the past (i.e., trying to live the affluent life that she had when she was young), and thus they became indifferent, even uninterested, in her, there were some members of the community who reveled on the fact that there lived a woman in their place that does not 'fit' the image of a 'pleasant' community member. This relationship is effectively illustrated by the narrator's description of people's behavior during her funeral: "our whole town went to her funeral: the men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of curiosity" The fact that Emily managed to survive on her own and with the help of her servant, Tobe, is not the only mystery that intrigued her community. Despite her denial to admit that she lives in poverty at the time of her death, another mystery that remained was the fate of Emily's relationship with Homer Barron, her supposed fianc who had suddenly disappeared from the community and Emily's life. Emily's deviant behavior was indeed confirmed when it was revealed later in the story that she was both poor and a murderer, having killed Homer when he denied her of her love for him. Though deviant in nature, the community's treatment of Emily as a deviant is a universal experience among us. At some point in our lives, we had experienced fair or unfair persecution by our society and community, and Faulkner's effective and sensitive portrayal of this theme through Emily and her community makes the short story truly representative of humanity's behavior and nature. The reason for "Luck"'s lack of representativeness or universality to humanity's general experience in life is because the story focused on the phenomenon of luck, which is not only uncommon, but an unpopular phenomenon in a human society that is currently dominated by the ideology of rationality, logic, and science. Embodied by the character of Scoresby, luck Mikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03338397782616711651noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8597870806389057255.post-90124382113851597102019-11-19T08:05:00.001-08:002019-11-19T08:05:03.141-08:00Different Views of Paintings Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 wordsDifferent Views of Paintings - Essay Example The essay "Different Views of Paintings" analyzes different paintings by considering narrative moment chosen by the artist, the scope, and scale of the scene depicted, and the context of its production. Artemisia was a feminist who focused on serious subjects and addressed challenging themes. The painting Susanna and the Elders by Artemisia Gentileschi represents an opposition against such a tradition. Indeed, only Artemisia Gentileschi used the female gaze to paint. The artist used oil on canvas to prepare the painting Susanna and the Elders, 1610 that measures 1.70m by 1.21m. Many artists hold the view that the seventeen-year-old Artemisia received immense help from her father. Nevertheless, Artemisia presents a popular and acceptable painting in Susanna and the Elders, 1610. The inclusion of anatomical accuracy and advanced color and construction made Susanna and the Elders, 1610 a successful piece of art (Brash 1). Unlike other artists who were indifferent to the original languag e, Susanna and the Elders, 1610, Artemisia adopted the realism of Caravaggio unlike other major artists. This was Artemisiaââ¬â¢s first piece of art.The painting Susanna and the Elders by Artemisia Gentileschi presents a Biblical story where a virtuous Jewish wife sexually harassed by the elders of her community . Artemisia shows how lust overcame the two men as they spied on Susanna as she took a bath. The two men cornered her and black mailed her into either sleeping with them or they would level false claims against her.
